Tutorial for General Evaluator doc

You will be General Evaluator for the first time next week. Below are some tips on filling that role.

Please see the General Evaluator description in the Competent Communicator manual (p66-67). See also the General Meeting Agenda for the flow of the program.

The General Evaluator has four primary roles.

1) Plan for the Evaluation part of the meeting

  • Contact the Evaluators before the meeting to confirm their attendance and determine how to introduce them (theme intro from Toastmaster of the Day)
  • Contact the Evaluators and encourage them to contact their Speaker ahead of the meeting to clarify what to evaluate the speaker on
  • With new/novice evaluators, review what makes an effective and motivating evaluation

2) Introduce the evaluators:

  • The Table Topics Evaluator evaluates both the Table Topics Master and the Table Topics Speakers
  • The Evaluators evaluate the Speakers

Then ask the timer if there are any disqualifications and call for a vote for Best Evaluator. Call for the Time Keeper's and Grammarian's reports, then present the General Evaluator evaluation.

3) Evaluate those on the program that are not otherwise evaluated (primarily the Evaluators)

  • Presiding Officer, Prayer & Pledge Person, Toastmaster, Grammarian, Time Keeper , One Minute Toastmaster, and Evaluators.
  • Avoid re-evaluating Table Topics or Speakers. If an evaluator missed something major, frame it as follows, "Evaluator could have mentioned xyz which would have strengthened the evaluation."

4) Evaluate the meeting in general

  • In general, how successful was the meeting?
  • How well were handoffs between speakers handled?
  • Did the meeting seem to run smoothly, or were there too many distractions, etc.?

In order to keep our meeting on time, the General Evaluator's evaluation (Parts 3 and 4 above) will be timed at 3-5 minutes (3-Green, 4-Yellow, 5-Red).

Please do not hesitate to contact your mentor or the VP Education to discuss any concerns. Thank you for filling this important Toastmasters role!
